Take a Journey ‘In the Heights’ of New York City

‘In the Heights’ is a musical with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes. The story is set over the course of three days, involving characters in the largely Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City.

From the creator of the smash-hit HAMILTON, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s multiple Tony-winning Best Musical captures the sights and sounds of a vibrant New York City neighborhood on the brink of change, telling the story of a bodega owner whose life is interwoven with residents who visit his store.

The thrilling Tony-winning score combines Latin rhythms, hip-hop and pop for an exhilarating journey about chasing your dreams and what it truly means to be home.

Miranda wrote the earliest draft of In the Heights in 1999 his freshman year of college. After the show was accepted by Wesleyan University’s student theater company Second Stage, where Miranda then added “freestyle rap … bodegas, and salsa numbers.”

It at the time played as an 80-minute, one-act show from April 27 to 29, 2000 which had reportedly sounded like “A hip-hop version of Rent”. After two Wesleyan seniors and two alumni, John Buffalo Mailer, Neil Patrick Stewart, Anthony Veneziale and Thomas Kail saw the play they approached Miranda. They asked if the play could be expanded to resemble a Broadway production.

In 2002, Miranda worked with director Thomas Kail and wrote five separate drafts of ‘In the Heights’. Then in 2004 the book writer Quiara Alegría Hudes joined the team.

After a 2005 tryout in Waterford, Connecticut and a 2007 Off-Broadway run, the show opened on Broadway in March 2008. It was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards and won four, including the 2008 Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography awards.

Variety magazine once said; “The wit of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s lyrics, the playful dexterity of his rhymes and his dynamic score make the show an uncalculated charmer.”

‘In the Heights’, according to the producers, “tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood — a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.”

A film adaptation of the musical is set for release on June 26, 2020. So check out the musical event for yourself while its still on the stage.
